Biography

David Phy was born in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.  He was surrounded by music growing up due to his father being a professional pianist/organist and teacher.  David attended the University of Louisville on scholarship from 1993-1998 working towards a Music Ed degree with Jazz emphasis.

Masterclasses / Clinics

Dr. David Phy Posing with TromboneDr. David Phy has given clinics at the Louisiana Music Educators Association (LMEA) conference, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Southern Mississippi University and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA).  They are tailored to individual schools or university’s needs and levels.  Topics include but are not limited to:  big band rehearsals, jazz trombone sectionals, trombone quartet, productive practice techniques, jazz theory, fast jazz trombone articulations “doodle tongue”, use of alternate slide positions, suggested trombone listening, transcribing techniques, improvisation, pentatonics on the trombone.  For more information please contact: dphytrombone@yahoo.com.

Arrangements

David has been arranging for small groups since starting his own music projects in 2002.   His arrangements have been performed at the National WW2 Museum, The Las Vegas Hilton, the New Orleans Latin Jazz Festival, The Las Vegas Drum Festival and The University of Alabama at Birmingham.  His commissioned works includes pieces for “A Tribute to Elvis, The Dream King Live” in Las Vegas and on National tour. As well as, “Island Breezes” the dedication ceremony for the Boeing Company: Freedom Pavilion, at the National WW2 Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana.
